What Happened to Tix? The Rise and Fall of Roblox Tickets

2026-05-05|4 min read

If you played Roblox before 2016, you remember Tix. If you didn't, you've probably heard older players talk about them with a mix of nostalgia and sadness. Here's the full story.

What Were Tix?

Tix (short for Tickets) were Roblox's free currency. Every player earned them just by:

  • Logging in daily (10 Tix per day)
  • Having other players visit your game (1 Tix per visit)
  • Selling items on the catalog

You could trade Tix for Robux at a fluctuating exchange rate (usually around 10-15 Tix per 1 Robux) through the Roblox Trade Currency system. This meant every player could slowly earn Robux without spending real money.

The Golden Era (2007-2016)

Tix were introduced in 2007 and became a core part of Roblox's economy:

  • New players could buy basic catalog items with Tix
  • Dedicated players could save up and trade for Robux
  • Game developers earned Tix from player visits
  • The Trade Currency page was one of the most-visited pages on Roblox

For many players, especially younger ones without access to a credit card, Tix were the only way to customize their avatar and buy game passes. The daily login reward of 10 Tix wasn't much, but over time it added up.

Why Roblox Removed Tix (April 14, 2016)

Roblox officially removed Tix on April 14, 2016. Their reasons:

  • Bot abuse: People created thousands of fake accounts to farm Tix from daily login bonuses. These bots inflated the Tix supply and disrupted the economy.
  • Revenue shift: Roblox was growing as a company and wanted to push users toward purchasing Robux. Free currency undermined that.
  • Simplified economy: Managing two currencies with a floating exchange rate was complex. One currency is simpler for users and developers.
  • Developer payments: Roblox was shifting toward paying developers in Robux (and eventually real money through DevEx), making Tix less relevant.

The Community Reaction

The removal was controversial. Many players felt like Roblox was becoming "pay to play." Without Tix:

  • Free players could no longer customize their avatars
  • New players had default appearances with no way to change them
  • The daily login incentive disappeared
  • A piece of Roblox's identity was gone

The backlash was significant, but Roblox stuck with the decision. Over time, they added some free items to compensate, but nothing replaced the steady Tix income.

How to Get Free Robux Now (Post-Tix)

Since Tix are gone, here's how players earn Robux without spending money in 2026:

  • Offer-based reward sites: Complete advertiser tasks for Robux
  • Game development: Build games and sell game passes
  • Roblox affiliate program: Share game links and earn from signups
  • Trading limited items: Buy and sell with Roblox Premium
  • Promo codes: Occasional free item codes from Roblox events

None of these fully replace the simplicity of "log in and get Tix," but they're the best options available.

Will Tix Ever Come Back?

Probably not. Roblox has shown no interest in reintroducing a free currency. The company went public in 2021 and has continued to focus on Robux as the sole currency. The Tix era was a different time in Roblox's history — before it became a billion-dollar platform.

But the spirit of Tix lives on in the community's desire for free ways to earn Robux. That demand is exactly why reward platforms exist today.
